Polychrome happens to be Nick May's favourite polished material. We only select from the top 20% of Polychrome material which is worked. The material is graded according to the complexity of patterns and colours. It is believe to have been originally found as early as 2006 close to the Ocean Jasper deposits of Madagascar. Often called Desert or Picasso Jasper due to the stunning patterns and complex colours. Polychrome Jasper is a beautiful stone with a complex colour mix of greys, oranges, and sandy colours. Nowadays, we only select the top 10 to 20% of polished material and every single batch is carefully graded and priced. Toprock grading standards of Ocean Jasper are exceptionally high, as we have almost 3 decades of experience with the material. Those familiar with the “old school” material from many moons ago would likely consider modern material to be low quality. Only a small % of material mined in the last decade has yielded traditional orbicular patterns. However, the more “modern” deposits tend to have a lower diversity of colours and are dominated by banded patterns. Ocean Jasper is often showing a wide range of colours, from pink, blue, yellow, green and almost everything else in-between. The earliest material was more commonly referred to as Orbicular Ocean Jasper and was aptly named due to the complex circular patterns associated to this early material. We are a great source for Ocean Jasper, and carry a variety of Ocean Jasper cabochons, and rough and polished slabs.General Description Ocean Jasper has been around for several decades. In 2008, while exploring for more deposits of the highly desired Ocean Jasper, the first deposit of Polychrome was accidentally found. OakRocks has been in the rock and mineral business for 30 years. Ocean Jasper is a calming and soothing stone and it is believed to teach responsibility and patience, as well as aid in regulating breathing for meditation. There is a lower grade variety found nearby that is marketed as Ocean Wave Jasper. The semi precious gemstone lapidary material is believed to be from the Cretaceous period, about 63 million to 135 million years old. It has wavy patterns or orbs of green-gray, white, cream, beige, brown, pink and maroon. Both are chalcedonies but jasper is usually used to refer to opaque stones. No new sources for this wonderful material have been found. The mine stretched back about 40 meters into the hill, and it panned out in 2006. The area has no road, so the material was transported to civilization by boat. Ocean Jasper was only seen and collected at low tide. It was discovered around 2000 and was vary plentiful at first.
